One of the key artists who shaped the sound of Latin New York, Tito Puente was best known as a virtuoso timbal player, playing with Machito in the early 1940s and a regular at the fabled Palladium dancehall with his own band through the 1940s and 50s with the rise of the Mambo craze. Later, with Latin music labels Tico and Fania, he became a star bandleader whose orchestra delivered fiery dancefloor hits fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms with Latin Jazz. Five time Grammy winner and crowned El Rey del Timbal, the legendary king of Latin music died in 2000.
